Minnesota State Skeet Championships

October 19, 2023 By Cara Woodard

The 2023 Minnesota State Skeet Championships were held at the Minneapolis Gun Club in Prior Lake, Minnesota, on August 25-27. The weather was ideal throughout all events, with a few tricky periods of wind to keep shooters alert. Jared Miller, a 17-year-old Junior from East Bethel, Minnesota, led a field of 42 shooters, winning High Overall, High All Around, .410 Bore, and Doubles championships.

Jake Boerboon

Bob Muehlenkamp, Brian Hendrickson, and Justin Staebell managed recording of the scores and winners using MySkeet software which provided online access to reports throughout the tournament. It communicates with the NSSA database, eliminating many tasks in the registration process and avoiding the misspelling of competitor names and their associated information (classifications, concurrents, etc.). Mike Quigley did a great job handling the shoot-offs.

The Friday Doubles event drew 26 competitors. Two Juniors claimed top honors. Jared Miller won the Doubles Championship with the lone 96, and 18-year-old Junior, Gabriel Anderson, won the runner-up title. The Doubles class winners were Tadd Stanton (A – another Junior), Bruce Pearson (B), Jeffrey Schneider (C), and Art Peterson (D).

MSSA President Randal Baker hosted the annual year-end meeting, noting that 33 Minnesota shooters posted 100-straight scores to date, and first-100 straights were posted by Justin Staebell, Brodie Schaefer, and Randy Vaske.

David Baker posted the first perfect score of the tournament in Saturday’s 12-gauge event. Gabriel Anderson’s 99 claimed his second runner-up title. Class winners were Matt Robinson, Jared Miller, Tim Olson, Erin Quaranta, Emily Wraspir, and Jon Parranto in classes AA through E.

David Baker’s 99 won the 20-gauge championship after a shoot-off with Tim Olson and senior veteran Don Tesch. Tim Olson took runner-up. Bob Rick won class AA, followed by Chad Herrmann, Jared Miller, Don Tesch, and Roger Carlson in classes A through D.

Jacob Boerboon won Sunday’s 28-gauge event by posting an uncontested 100, his first-ever perfect score in the 28-gauge. A lone 99 posted by Jared Miller earned the runner-up spot. AA-1 went to David Baker, and Randy Vaske, Tim Olson, Bart Ott, and Mark Cameron won classes A through D.

Jared Miller posted the lone 99 in the .410-Bore event to win the gun championship outright. Dan Kampa posted a 96 to win the runner-up spot, followed by David Baker (A), Tim Olson (B), Erin Quaranta (C), and Jon Parranto (D). Mike Quigley made Minnesota state history by shooting (and breaking) his 200,000th registered target.

Jared Miller’s 393 won the High Over All Championship over runner-up David Baker, who posted a 390. Jared Miller also won the High All Around Championship. HAA runner-up was Jacob Boerboon.

The MSSA thanks Mark Cameron and his staff at the Minneapolis Gun Club for hosting another excellent state championship.

Minnesota State Skeet Championships

November 29, 2022 By Cara Woodard

The 2022 Minnesota State Skeet Championships were held at the Metro Gun Club in Blaine, Minnesota, on August 19-21. The weather was close to perfect throughout all events, with slight periods of overcast and minimal wind. Jerry Ryan of Prior Lake, Minnesota, led a field of 40 shooters, winning High Overall, High All Around, 20-Gauge, and Doubles championships.

Champion, Jerry Ryan

David Baker, Dan Kampa, and Justin Staebell did a great job managing the tournament, with the help of automation provided by the MySkeet software. Shooters were able to see their scores on a large monitor as they were entered. The new software also provided reports that were accessible online throughout the tournament. It communicates with the NSSA database, eliminating many tasks in the registration process, and avoiding the misspelling of competitor names and their associated information such as classifications and concurrents.

Twenty-eight shooters took to the fields for the doubles event on Friday. Jerry Ryan’s 98 won the event outright. He was followed by 16-year-old Jared Miller, who posted the lone 97 to claim the runner-up place. Class winners were Bob Rick (AA), Justin Staebell (A), Bruce Pearson (B), Mike Quigley (C), and Art Peterson (D).

MSSA President Randal Baker hosted the annual year-end meeting that reviewed various administration topics and elected officers for next year.

Saturday’s 12-gauge event featured two 100-straight scores posted by Jared Miller and Bruce Pearson (his first-ever registered 100). The ensuing shootoff resulted in a victory for Bruce, with Jared taking his second runner-up spot for the tournament. Class winners were Jared Miller, Dan Kampa, Mark VanderBloomer, Jeffrey Schneider, Roger Carlson, and Art Peterson in classes AAA through E.

The 20-gauge event was another 2022 milestone for Al Savage. He was honored when his photo appeared on a recent cover of Clay Target Nation [although we got his name wrong in the print issue]. His second milestone came when posting his 100,000th registered target in the 20-gauge event.

Jerry Ryan won the 20-gauge championship with an uncontested 100. Tate Peterson took runner-up after a shoot-off of 99s with Dan Kampa, who claimed AA1. Brian Hendrickson won class A, followed by Mark VanderBloomer, Gabriel Anderson, and Joseph Ambrose in classes B through D.

Dan Kampa won Sunday’s 28-gauge event with an uncontested 100. A lone 99 posted by Bob Rick earned the runner-up spot. AA1 went to Jerry Ryan after a shoot-off of 98s with Gabriel Anderson and David Baker. David Baker claimed A1, followed by Gabriel Anderson (B1), Justin Baker (C1), and David Seidel (D1).

MSSA Past President Brian Hendrickson won the .410 title with the top score of 97. Justin Baker was runner-up with 96 after a shoot-off with Jerry Ryan, who claimed AA1. Bob Rick, Robert Muehlenkamp, Jeffrey Schneider, and Gabriel Anderson followed in classes A through D.

Jerry Ryan emerged as High Over All Champion with a score of 391×400. The HOA runner-up score was 388, posted by Gabriel Anderson. HOA class champions were Jared Miller (AA), Dan Kampa (A), Mark VanderBloomer (B), Jeffrey Schneider (C), Roger Carlson (D), and Art Peterson (E).

The MSSA thanks Rick Wilder and his staff for hosting an excellent state championship. Rick owns the Metro Gun Club and is bravely dealing with a neighborhood of ever- expanding commercial industry.

Minnesota State Championships

January 17, 2020 By

Seventeen-year old Hayden Wege claimed championships in nearly every event at the 2019 Minnesota State Skeet Championships. He first appeared at the Minnesota State Championships in 2016 at age 14, shooting in class D with an HOA score of 355. In subsequent state shoots, Hayden posted HOA scores of 383, 389 and now 395, claiming the 2019 Minnesota State Championships in doubles, 12-gauge, 28-gauge, .410, HOA and HAA.

Hayden attributes much of his success to Tony Lowe, his mentor and NSSA Certified Skeet Instructor who also coaches for the Minnesota Youth Shooting Program SCTP team, as well his mother Kristen Wege, who serves as Hayden’s coach and is a Certified Shotgun Instructor, and the head SCTP coach for the Minnesota Youth Shooting Program. Hayden will finish high school this year and enroll at Bethel University in McKenzie, Tennessee, where he earned a shooting scholarship.

The American flag was raised at the start of the doubles event with the singing of the National Anthem by Justin Staebell, a formidable skeet shooter who sings opera.

The 20-gauge championship was won by incoming Minnesota Skeet Shooting Association president, Jeff Schneider, who bested Hayden Wege in a shoot-off of 99s.

Class champions include:

HOA – Michael Lohman (AA), Justin Baker (A), Janice C. Lohman (B), Mark Cameron (C) and David G. Seidel (D)

12-Gauge – Mark VanderBloomer (A), Robert Muehlenkamp (B), Tate Peterson (C),

Marcus Andrade (D) and Arthur R. Peterson Jr. (E)

20-Gauge – Hayden Wege (AA), Gene J. Helsene (A), Paul Davis (B) and Harry Hoppmann (C)

28-Gauge – Mark VanderBloomer (AA), Gene J. Helsene (A), Brian Hendrickson (B), Mike Halbach (C) and Mark Cameron (D)

.410-Bore – Justin Staebell (AA), Justin Baker (A), Randy Vaske (B), Mark Cameron (C) and

Tate Peterson (D)

The Minnesota Skeet Shooting Association thanks Minneapolis Gun Club Manager, Mark Cameron, for hosting another great state championship. Thanks also to Bob Muehlenkamp and Mike Quigley for running the NSSA software, making the reservations and maintaining the scoreboard.
