PSSA held the 90th annual Pennsylvania State Open Skeet Championships as an iShoot on August 14-16. Six clubs were involved: Carlisle Fish & Game Association, Clinton Irwin Rod & Gun Club, Generations Skeet Club, Liberty Township Sportsman Club, Skyline Skeet and Trap LLC, and York/Adams County Game & Fish Association. The weather was warm and humid all weekend with scattered rain at several of the clubs on Sunday.
One hundred seventy participants, including 33 out-of-state or country (two Canadians) shooters, shot at least one gun. Participants included: 126 four-gun shooters, 114 doubles shooters, 158 12-gauge shooters, 142 20-gauge shooters, 137 28-gauge shooters and 134 .410 bore shooters. There were 18 100-straights: 11 in the 12-gauge, four in the 20-gauge and three in the 28-gauge. The shoot difficulty factor was 19.20.
Open and PA HOA winners were Chris Kline (champion, 395), Fran Kosmacki (runner-up, 395) and Tyler Mroczka (third, 393). Open and PA HAA Champion, runner-up and third, respectively, were Kline (492), Nick Boerboon (490) and Kosmacki (490).
PA Champion, runner-up and third, respectively, were: Boerboon, Bryson Fox and Alyssa Gormish in doubles; Denny Lehman, Pat Leyo and Joe Vescovi in the 12; Frank Smithmyer, Kline and Lehman in the 20; Adam Vollmer, Smithmyer and Jack Harshbarger in the 28; and Tom Hillard, Tommy Johnson and Jake Hamilton in the .410.
Of 21 podium spots (12, 20, 28, .410, doubles, HOA and HAA x 3), non-residents snared five: Jackson Matusz (New York, 12-gauge Champion); Conor Stephens (Virginia, 20-gauge runner-up); Sam Armstrong (Maryland, .410 bore Champion); Andrew Jones (Virginia, .410 bore third); and Bruce Christian (Indiana, Doubles Champion).
Class first places (PA) were: Kline, Gary Nace, Tyler Jones, Carl Phillips and Camden Simanski (doubles, AA-D); Kosmacki, Mroczka, Colby Eckert, Brian Fox, Tracey Hartley and Jeffery Shearer (12-gauge, AA-E); Zak Sutton, Joe Vescovi, Kurt Fisher, Tyler Jones and Justin Studebaker (20-gauge, AA-D); Kurt Suprynowicz, Ethan Call, Tim Vescovi, Ernie Avolio and Jason Callahan (28-gauge, AA-D); and Boerboon, Evan Martin, Leyo, James Holtz and Trevor Hanna (.410 bore AA-D).
All seven Sub-Juniors (under 14 years old) and 17 Juniors (14 to 17 years old) who shot the 12-gauge had 50% of their entry fees paid by PSSA. Sam Manuel (Virginia), Barrett Carson and Camden Simanski, respectively, were Sub-Junior Open HOA Champion, runner-up and third. Jake Hamilton, Jackson Matusz (New York) and Jack Petrosky, respectively, were Junior Open HOA Champion, runner-up and third.
Fifteen ladies participated. Open Lady HOA winners were Alyssa Gormish (Lady Champion), Sue Huszai (runner-up, Ohio) and Missy Vescovi (third). PA Lady HOA winners were Alyssa (Champion), Missy (runner-up) and Emily Harshbarger (third). Except for the 12-gauge, Alyssa Gormish won every Ladies title in this shoot!
PA’s All State teams for 2026 (2025 data) are: 1st Team-Chris Kline (0.9821 HOA average), Nick Boerboon, Kurt Suprynovwicz, Josh Crofutt, and Fran Kosmacki; 2nd Team-Clay Gormish, Denny Lehman, Brian Steinert, Gary Nace and Mark Strickland.
Congrats to Denny Lehman, a PA Veteran (70-79 years old) shooter. In addition to making the PA State 2nd team for 2026, Denny was Open runner-up and PA Champion in the 12 and PA third in the 20.
And just so we don’t forget what it is all about, please applaud Jake Meyer from Central Mountain High School in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, who shot his first registered 25-straight in this year’s State Shoot. Way to go, Jake!
