Ladies Skeet Clinic at World Skeet Championships

October 19, 2023 By Cara Woodard

The inaugural Ladies Skeet Clinic was held on September 29 during the Mini World, with 12 participants paired with four instructors. Instructors were JoEllen Collin, Jackie Ego, Bethanne Miles, and Hannah Goddard, with Susie Galloway assisting. The objectives of the clinic were to provide a safe, friendly and supportive environment for our students to learn the fundamentals of shotgun shooting from and with other women.

Experience levels ranged from never having handled a gun/shotgun before, to some beginners who had shot a little skeet, sporting clays, or trap. All were eager to learn about skeet shooting.  We had classroom time where we got to know each other, gave a brief overview of clay target sports, with emphasis on skeet, its history, and NSSA, and conducted a thorough safety orientation.

JoEllen Collin and Jackie Ego checked everyone for eye dominance, and the instructors helped dial in gun fit for all the ladies. Instructors went over proper mount and stance before each group headed out to the four fields NSSA had ready for the group. It wasn’t long before shots were fired and cheers went up and down the line as some of the students broke their very first skeet targets.

At the conclusion of shooting, the group headed to headquarters, met members of the NSSA staff and the Executive Committee, and enjoyed a fabulous lunch, compliments of NSSA. NSSA also provided Complimentary Limited Memberships for all the clinic participants. Huge thanks to duPont/Krieghoff, Krieghoff, Briley, Federal, and NSSA for their generous gifts, loaner guns, ammunition and the special touches that made this inaugural clinic a success. With a full clinic and waiting list for the inaugural event, we’re already planning for an expanded 2024 event.

Ladies Skeet Classic

June 15, 2022 By Cara Woodard

Spring in Covington, Georgia, is typically associated with cherry blossoms for the unknowing, but for those who know what’s important, it’s finally spring, time to break out of hibernation and head toward Atlanta for the Ladies Charity Skeet Classic. Ask any of the ladies who attend annually, and they’ll tell you the best part is seeing friends, especially those only seen once or twice a year, and adding new friends to their tribe. It’s the season opener for most ladies, so there’s a particular optimism in the air, even in these weird times of lingering COVID, ammo uncertainty, reloading components scavenger hunting, and soaring fuel prices. Much as one would love for shooting to be the biggest thing about the weekend, it has a lot of competition to be front and center. We love our skeet family – sisters and friends in our game. We are passionate about our mission – raising money and promoting skeet among the ladies. We embrace our charity – Athens (GA) Area Habitat for Humanity and their goals. We relish celebrating each other’s success. Thirty-nine ladies from 12 states joined us this year, with nine first-time attendees and five new SCTP ladies. Georgia was the most well-represented with 12 attendees, North Carolina had six; five from Florida; four from Virginia; three from Tennessee; two each from Mississippi and West Virginia; and one each from Connecticut, Montana, New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Our Junior ladies were well represented but outnumbered by the more senior ladies.

Friday morning’s Ladies Novice Class, sponsored by Louise Terry and “First Shots” by the National Sports Shooting Foundation, which provided ammunition and goodies, has always been filled with excitement. Ladies with zero to minimal experience with a shotgun are the typical attendees; however, some repeat ladies love the outing. There was even a “two-fer,” as one attendee, Krystal Moody, was seven months pregnant. Her daughter was our youngest attendee to date. Fourteen ladies attended, under the fabulous coaching from Doug Thompson, Corrie Cloninger, Jason Cloninger, Mark Hall, Austin Shepherd and Doug Trautman. It’s great fun watching these ladies be successful on the field. They truly embrace the mantra “Breakin’ Clays Makes My Day”!

The novice ladies were barely off the field before ugly weather rolled in, allowing them to enjoy lunch, sponsored by Cross Creek Skeet Association, a bit early. A&H Catering, operated by Amber Schwarz and Hannah Moody, once again provided deliciousness for the ladies to re-hash their glory on the field.

As the tournament ladies rolled in, delivered original designer baskets, raffle table treasures and unique auction items, the weather lingered, with just enough lightning to keep the ladies off the field. Daylight Saving Time had already kicked in, which allowed us to delay and still get doubles completed as planned. Twenty-seven ladies entered the John Haugh Doubles Event. Two 98s were posted by Marina Pakis (TN) and Susan Huszai (OH), so they took to the shoot-off field where Pakis quickly overtook Huszai for champion and runner-up, respectively. Third was clean for Meredith Tunick-Kling (VA) with 97. Lynn Cogdill (MT) took A over Sydney Pittman (GA); Deanna Culpepper (GA) took B; Melissa Petitjean (GA) took C; Marie Trilli (PA) took D over Faith Henderson (GA).

As Friday evening arrived, it was time to put away the shotguns and shift gears to our first PJ Party Game Night sponsored by Daniel Defense, Todd Bender, Lori and Barry Sheffield, and Mark Thompson. A light dinner was served to all attendees as we got our first glance at the outfits the ladies were modeling! Once dinner was completed, we moved onto the highlight of the evening – game night. Melissa Petitjean led our evening and did an amazing job. She had several perfect games in her box of tricks. The games were quick and fun and quite original.  The evening was a great way for the newer ladies and our seasoned attendees to mix. We paraded our PJ contenders for votes, with Mary Beverly Gamble, Winnie Tucker and Linda Tucker the winners with matching jammies, slippers and hair accessories. Serious runner-up consideration was given to Deanna Culpepper and Melissa Petitjean. Our final act of the evening was to crown a Queen for the weekend – Hannah Goddard was crowned, pearlized and sashed in addition to getting coached in the proper way to wave (higher than the pearls and lower than the tiara). The evening was filled with much fun and laughter for participants and cheerleaders.

Saturday morning, the Jane and Doug Frazier 12-Gauge Event kicked off for 39 ladies. All additional weather hiccups had passed, and weather conditions were clear, but smooth sailing would have been a bit idealistic. After all it was March, and the winds blew! All weekend, the crystal was a bit rattly on the table, pending awards. The podium was clean when all scores were tallied. Katie Hunt (GA) posted the lone 100; Alison Boyette (FL) shot 99; Lynn Cogdill (MT) broke 98. Corrie Cloninger (NC) took A over Susie Huszai (OH); Culpepper took B; Susan Thompson (NC) took C; Tinsley Rigsby (GA) took D; and Faith Henderson took E over Celiabeth Branch (GA).

Lunch was sponsored by Promatic Machines. The weather was just cool enough for the ladies to enjoy soup, salads, sandwiches, and cookies. Again, A&H catering swooped in just as the food arrived to set up, serve, clean up and disappear to continue Saturday evening preparations.

Saturday afternoon, the Susan and Doug Thompson 28-Gauge Event ensued for 32 ladies. Once again, the podium was clean for Huszai with the single perfect score; Cloninger took runner-up with 98; Boyette claimed third with 97. Mary DeFrancesco (CT) took A; Josie Cloninger (NC) took B; Thompson took C, snaring a trophy in the event she and hubby sponsored; and Brayden Stokes (GA) took D class.

As Saturday nightfall developed, it was time to regroup and move onto the business of the evening. We enjoyed a delicious dinner of beef tenderloin, small potatoes, salad and cake. Food was prepared by A&H Catering, and sous chef, Jodie Lewis. Our evening was sponsored by Friends of the GSSA (Georgia State Skeet Association), and cakes were made by Just Frosted Sweets, owned by Krystal Moody.

This year’s guest speaker Saturday evening was Paul Farr, Director for Marketing and ReStore Operations of Athens Area Habitat for Humanity. Our project this year is the Family Promise apartments. Athens Area Habitat will be partnering with another nonprofit, Family Promise of Athens (FPA), who will be paying the rent on the renovated units. FPA works with families who have fallen into homelessness. They create a personalized plan for each family to get back on their feet. These units will house the families while FPA provides food and other necessities and the adults find employment and do everything else needed to get back to living on their own. So over time, these homes will be helping many parents and children to turn their lives around.

Wrap-up and distribution of the raffle ticket items was handled flawlessly by our amazing team of “royals” – Susan Huszai, Mary DeFrancesco and Lynn Cogdill. They were challenged with space issues this year, as well over 200 items appeared.

Many of our ladies bring baskets for auction, most designed by the ladies themselves. This year’s most creative basket was donated by the Cloninger Ladies, created from a garden hose and filled with great items for a gardener! The basket that raised the most money was a date-night basket with a cuddle blanket, shotgun ammunition and maybe a nice beverage to enjoy, created by Norma Rickmond.

Our live auction, conducted by Mr. Tripp Foy, is a highlight of the weekend. He knows our ladies and does an incredible job. He was assisted by Al Means, Eric, Evan and Dan Heit, and Meredith Tunick-Kling. One never knows what auction items will be carried through the doors or what will be the biggest hit. This year’s hottest items were ammunition; as a result, we raised more money than ever before with this endeavor.

As Habitat homeowners move into their new abode, there are often little items that one might need or want to tailor their house to make it more homey. We raised money to assist, called “Fill the House,” much like a shower for a new bride. This money remained separate from other funds we raised, yet still counted towards our total donation. This year’s recognition for “Most Funds Raised” went to Susan Huszai. We also recognized the lady who got the most sponsors, Mary DeFrancesco. The ladies did a great job reaching out to their local businesses and gun club members who might not have attended the shoot but still wanted to support our initiative.

Sunday morning was the 20-Gauge Event, sponsored by Cloninger, Inc., with 32 entries. Four perfect scores made the scoreboard, from Boyette, Corrie Cloninger, Huszai and Hunt. The ladies hit the field ready for a long stay. Boyette dropped early, securing AA. Hunt and Huszai each let a high 4 fly, after watching Cloninger crunch her pair, earning her Champion. Hunt missed on her next station, taking third, and since Huszai cleaned her station, she was crowned runner-up Josie Cloninger (NC) took A; MaryBeth Parris (NC) took B; Addison Wallace (NC) took C; and Jill Taylor took D. Jill was seen getting some coaching tips on the practice field Sunday morning, working on a couple of stations– clearly the session was just the edge she needed.

Sunday was pretty breezy and never really got quite warm so another round of everyone’s favorite soup, Zuppa Toscana, was perfect, with broccoli salad, sandwiches, cookies, brownies and the remaining cake, sponsored by Tom Bolling.

Sunday afternoon was the .410 Bore Event, sponsored in memory of Barbara Bozard, one of the original ladies who began the Ladies Charity Skeet Classic. Huszai was high on the scoreboard with a single 96, crowning her champion; Hunt & Boyette tied with 95 so they headed to the field. Each lady let a low 4 slide on the first pass, then Hunt let a high 5 slide by and Boyette shut the door with her pair, to secure runner-up and leave third to Hunt. Corrie Cloninger took AA; Parris took A over DeFrancesco; Anderson took B; Karen Ruddle (WV) took C; and Winnie Tucker (FL) took D honors.

Matthews Trenching Co., Inc. HOA Champion was Huszai with 393. Runner-up was Boyette with 391; third was Corrie Cloninger with 389, AA went to Hunt, A went to Anderson, B went to Josie Cloninger, C went to Thompson, D went to Stokes. This year an anonymous sponsor made it possible for am HOA 3-Lady Blind to be awarded to the highest team of Corrie Cloninger, Lynn Cogdill and Becky Myers. Each lady received a free four-gun entry to the 2023 LCSC.

We shoot an Annie Oakley (gals) and Frank Butler (guys) Game with one round of skeet, trap, 5-stand and a few pistol shots. This event is sponsored by Howell Traps and White Flyer. Our pistol range was manned by Mike Wasielewski and his buddy. The guys are always so great with the ladies, ensuring they remain safe, learn a bit about pistols and punch some holes in the paper. Annie honors went to Melissa Petitjean as champion and Jill Taylor as runner-up. Frank honors went to Cannon Petitjean as champion and Don Pence as runner-up. New this year was an added Teams Event, titled Pardners. Teams could be two ladies or one lady/one gent. Our champion Pardners were Melissa and Cannon Petitjean. They both won individual awards, and when teamed together, what a powerhouse! Runner-up Pardners were Alison Boyette and Corrie Cloninger.

We even let the fellas participate a bit this year. They shot registered targets to support our charity. We appreciated their support and hope their average cards appreciated the love.

The funds are still being tallied at this writing. The final donation will be shared on Facebook on the Ladies Charity Skeet Classic page and our webpage at www.ladiescharityshootclassic.org.

To the ladies, sponsors, and volunteers, a huge thank you to each for the role you played. Thank you to South River Gun Club, which works so well for our soiree, and staff for allowing us to take over the facility for the weekend. Thank you to our referees – Doug Thompson, Joe Dickson, Eric Heit, Evan Heit, and Dan Heit. We appreciate all the tasks done, asked and unspoken. Hats off to our house photographer, Greg Huszai who took the amazing photos. Also, to those ladies who snapped casual photos throughout the weekend and shared them. Together everyone did an amazing job of catching the spirit of our tournament.

Start making plans for 2023! We will be back at it again soon.

Ladies Charity Skeet Classic

May 11, 2021 By Cara Woodard

Champion – Mackinzee Swetman (center), Runner-up – Sue Huszai (left), Third – Dani Zeigler (right). Left to right: AA CH Corrie Cloniger, B CH Josie Cloniger, D CH Brayden Stokes, C CH Susan Galloway (not pictured).

As 2021 has unfolded, ladies were eager to return to the skeet field, making for an increase in numbers for the 26th Ladies Charity Skeet Classic, hosted by South River Gun Club, in Covington, Georgia, March 19-21.  With all the challenges of the past year, distractions were welcomed, and busting clay targets on the field fit the bill perfectly!

Thirty-four ladies from 12 states attended. Eight of the ladies had never experienced the Ladies Charity previously, but each is now committed to future Ladies tournaments. The largest concurrent, Lady notwithstanding, was Junior, so the younger ladies were often found standing front and center on the podium at the end of each event.

The Ladies Novice Skeet Class was hosted by the National Sports Shooting Foundation’s “First Shots” program, which provided ammunition and goodies for the 14 ladies who turned out to be our most energetic and enthusiastic participants. They were wonderful cheerleaders for each other and had a blast! The coaching staff was top-notch, led by Doug Thompson and joined by Austin Shepherd, Dan Degood and Cannon Petitjean, who shared their skills to ensure all our ladies were successful. A&H Catering provided a delightful lunch break for the ladies before they headed to the pistol range to punch some holes in paper with Mike Wasielewsi as their coach.

Steve Shackleford Memorial Doubles were held Friday afternoon. Corrie Cloninger (NC) took Champion unchallenged with 98 on her first visit to the LCSC. Two 97s hit the field to settle runner-up and third between Andrea Beyer (MS) and Mackinzee Swetman (TX). Beyer let a low-house slide on the first visit to station 4 and Swetman hit the pair to secure runner-up. Class champions were Alison Boyette (GA) A class, Josie Cloninger (NC) B, Lynn Cogdill (MT) C, and Becky Myers (VA) D.

The Jane and Doug Frazier 12-Gauge Event was held Saturday morning. One 98 by a local Junior Lady, Dani Zeigler (GA), won the champion title. Another two 98s, Swetman and Sue Huszai (OH), took to the field to determine the next titles. Huszai took advantage of a miss by Swetman to take runner-up, and Swetman took third. Class champions were Corrie Cloninger AA, Sydney Pittman (GA) A, Deanna Culpepper (GA) B, Sue Bogardus (FL) C, Melissa Petitjean (GA) D.

The Barbara Bozard Memorial 28-Gauge Event was held Saturday afternoon. Two perfect scores were posted by Alison Boyette (GA) and Corrie Cloninger, so they took to the field to settle the top position on the podium. Boyette cleaned two stations, and Cloninger missed her second target on station 4 to give Boyette the championship and runner-up for herself. Third place went to Jessica Simmerman (MS), unchallenged with 99. Class champions were Sue Huszai AA; Mackinzee Swetman A; Deanna Culpepper B; Susan Thompson (NC) C; Brayden Stokes (GA) D.

This year there were well over 200 items of all kinds on the tables for the raffle drawings — handcrafted goodies, shooting gear, household items, jewelry, clothing, manly and girly things, as well as entry fees to upcoming tournaments. Our most highly coveted raffle table item was a gorgeous Italian leather single gun case with shearling lining. The ladies were almost territorial about guarding the cup for tickets! As it turned out, a local club member who had purchased one card of tickets to support the shoot was the winner of the case.

Saturday night’s guest speaker was Spenser Frye, Athens Area Habitat for Humanity Director, who also serves in the Georgia General Assembly as the state representative for Georgia House District 118. Frye shared with the ladies how COVID has impacted projects in Athens and shifted the focus to testing and reducing positive cases so volunteers can return to helping with Habitat projects. He noted that virtually all the things discussed passionately in House sessions are the same things that are impacted and improved upon when there is home ownership in the family. He said that Athens Area Habitat is partnering with the National Ready Mix Concrete Association and the Insulating Concrete Forms Manufacturers Association to build a concrete home as a cost-effective alternative since lumber prices have exploded.

Following our dinner by A&H Catering, almost 20 baskets, along with other items, were up for live auction. The auction was both entertaining and hugely successful in raising money. Our most original basket this year was “Responsible Adult Pampering Basket,” filled with all things necessary to pamper oneself after a hard weekend of shooting and beating the fellas! Andrea Beyer, Katie Hunt and Jessica Simmerman were the creators of this basket. Our highest bid basket, created by Deanna Culpepper and Lisa Stroupe, was a wagon filled with all things that could be used or found while spending the day at the beach. One creative basket that was certainly the most original was a butterfly basket, complete with five chrysalis (butterflies in the making) that made the trip from Florida to the shoot and then returned to Florida to emerge as butterflies. For many of the ladies, it was a refresher biology class. The butterfly basket was brought and tended by Winnie Tucker, and even though she did not purchase her own basket, she continued to tend to the butterflies until they were released.

The Melissa Petitjean 20-Gauge Event was held Sunday morning. Corrie Cloninger posted the lone perfect score, securing the championship cleanly. Huszai posted the only 99 to snag runner-up honors sans challenge. Scores of 98 sent Mackinzee Swetman and Lynn Cogdill to the field for third honors.  Swetman let one slide on the first stop at station 4, and Cogdill smoked her pair, grabbing third. Class winners were Swetman AA, Zeigler A, Josie Cloninger B, Stokes C, and Marie Palmer (PA) D.

The John Haugh .410 Bore Event was held Sunday afternoon. The .410 is never predictable, and it’s no exception at the Ladies Shoot. Once the scores were all entered, a lone 99 was posted by Boyette, making her Champion. A single 97 gave runner-up honors to Mackinzee Swetman. Mary DeFrancesco (CT) and Zeigler tied at 95 for third, so to the field they took. DeFrancesco was ready for the long haul, but it didn’t take long; Zeigler dropped one on station 4’s first pass, handing third to DeFrancesco and taking Class A Champion for herself. Other class winners were Corrie Cloninger AA, Josie Cloninger B, Susan Galloway (MS) C, and Peyton Strickland (GA) D.

Matthews Trenching Co. HOA finished with 388 for Mackinzee Swetman, followed by 386 and runner-up for Huszai. A three-way tie at 385 set up a shoot-off for third. Corrie Cloninger led off, dropping one on her first stop on station 4 and putting pressure on Boyette, who did exactly the same, further adding pressure for Zeigler, who powered through. In two stations, she earned the third step on the podium.  Class winners were Corrie Cloninger AA, Boyette A, Josie Cloninger B, Galloway C, and Stokes D.

One of the fun games held over the weekend was 25 skeet, 25 trap and 25 adventurous 5-stand targets and 10 pistol shots. Our Annie Oakley Champion was Melissa Petitjean, and the Frank Butler Champion was Cannon Petitjean. Thanks to Howell Traps for the loan of the traps to hold this fun event for our shooters. One of the local youth teams, Georgia Storm, even took advantage of the setup and used the course for their practice session.

The funds were still being tallied at press time. You can get the final results from our Ladies Charity Skeet Classic Facebook page or our webpage at www.ladiescharityshootclassic.org.

We want to offer our thanks to South River Gun Club and staff for allowing us to take over the club for the weekend, our sponsors who made it possible to hold our shoot and pay it forward with our donation to Habitat, Athens Area Habitat for Humanity for partnering with us, our referees who made sure our participants got the best targets possible, and our volunteers who helped with the many things that had to be done. Watch for the forthcoming dates for the 2022 event.

Ladies Skeet Classic

June 22, 2020 By Cara Woodard

2020 Ladies Charity Skeet Classic

The 2020 Ladies Charity Skeet Classic was not without challenges, starting with finding a date that didn’t present too many conflicts. Little did we know, with the COVID-19 pandemic, our landing date of March 13-15 would ultimately be the best date scenario. At the front of the pandemic, travel restrictions, isolation and social distancing were just starting, so those factors did ultimately impact our numbers. Still, we were very fortunate to get to host our 25th Ladies Charity Skeet Classic, with activities being put on hold soon thereafter.

Ladies attended from nine states. Georgia had the most, seven attendees, with the event being held at South River Gun Club in Covington, Georgia. Ladies also attended from Florida, Mississippi, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Connecticut, Ohio and Tennessee.

This year our Ladies Learn to Shoot class hosted novice shooters who spent some time with two of our favorite coaches – Doug Thompson and John Hancock. The ladies returned to the clubhouse smiling after a morning on the skeet field. After a delicious lunch break, they ventured to the pistol range where Mike Wasielewsi coached them through great hits on their paper targets.

Doubles were held Friday afternoon. Marina Pakis (Tenn.) took Champion unchallenged with 94. Three scores of 93 meant a shoot-off for Andrea Beyer (Miss.), Katie Anderson (Ga.) and Mary DeFrancesco (Conn.). Beyer pounded four stations to take runner-up, Anderson smashed three stations to take third and DeFrancesco took class first.

Saturday morning was the 12-gauge event. Two 98s were the high score posted, so Susan Huszai (Ohio) and Anderson took to the field where Huszai missed on her second station and Anderson cleared station 4 to take Champion. Huszai was runner-up, and Jessica Simmerman (Miss.), with a 96, took third without a shoot-off.

Saturday afternoon was the 28-gauge event. Anderson posted her first 28-gauge 100 to secure Champion without a shoot-off. Four 98s headed out to settle the remaining steps on the podium – DeFrancesco, Pakis, Susan Galloway (Miss.) and Huszai. Huszai was the only lady to clean station 3, so she earned runner-up, while the other ladies continued on. Galloway outshot the others for third, while Pakis and DeFrancesco secured first in their respective classes.

Saturday there was an Annie Oakley event for the ladies with 25 skeet, 25 trap, 25 adventurous 5-stand and 10 pistol shots. The same event was offered for the men as a Frank Butler (Annie’s husband) event. The Annie Oakley Champion was Melissa Petitjean (Ga.), and the Frank Butler Champion was Doug Thompson (N.C.).

When not shooting, the ladies found over 100 raffle items on the tables to drop a ticket in for drawing. The items were homemade as well as purchased, new and weathered, manly and girlie – truly something to be had for anyone! Some individuals came to the club exclusively to shop for goodies. The ticket raffles raised just under $3000 from the array of donated merchandise.

As 2020 was our 25th year, we wanted to recognize our Founding Mothers who attended this year’s shoot and supported everyone with their shooting, love, recommendations, participation in the live auction and contagious fun attitude. Mary Beverly-Gamble, Carolyn Lause and Winnie Tucker attended from Florida, with Linda Tucker joining them. Barbara Bozard, another of our founding mothers, passed following last year’s LCSC. We included Barbara’s photo with this year’s centerpiece decoration. We honored each mother with a wrist corsage and a round of applause for all they have done and enabled us to do.

Prior to dinner, we had a presentation from Mr. Charles Smith with Athens Area Habitat for Humanity, our charity for year 25. Charles shared about what our funds provide for Habitat. This chapter of Habitat has many activities going on in the community. We are proud to partner with them and are confident our dollars are being well spent, with benefits extending to future generations.

Following dinner, MaryAnn Worsham assisted with our Basket and Item Auction. Our attending ladies created amazing baskets, with a theme of their choice. This year’s most popular basket was a firepit stocked with s’mores and snacks, as well as adult treats to enjoy during those cool nights with new warm accessories of gloves and hats, created by Hannah Goddard, Jessica Simmerman and Susan Galloway. The basket that raised the most money was a relaxation basket filled with assorted coffees and teas to enjoy, created by Andrea Beyer and Katie Hunt. The most highly coveted auction items this year were beautiful leather pouches, donated by Donny Weaver of Tarheel Leathercraft and the gorgeous handmade quilt with an appropriate “house” theme, donated by Susan Huszai. We were able to raise over $3000. Eric and Evan Heit were invaluable during the auction, assisting with displaying the items. The young men assisted with various tasks throughout the weekend as part of the BETA Club Volunteer Hours. We were delighted to have them.

Sunday morning was the 20-gauge event. Huszai let one target get away, to post a 99 for Champion, unchallenged. Beyer and Karen Ruddle (W.Va.) posted 98s and headed to the field to settle titles. Ruddle let one target slide on the station 4, securing third and giving Beyer runner-up.

The .410-bore event was held Sunday afternoon. The high score was 97, so Huszai and Anderson again found themselves on the field to shoot off. Huszai missed on her second pair, taking runner-up as Anderson closed the door with a clean station 4, awarding her Champion. The next high score was 95, which led Beyer and DeFrancesco back to the shoot-off field. Beyer’s doubles game is strong; she led off clean through two stations, grabbing third, while DeFrancesco missed on station 4, taking class first.

Sunday sporting allowed anyone interested to shoot a round of 5-stand. Lady Champion was Jessica Simmerman and Man Champion was Eric Heit.

High Overall was clean for all places (a shoot manager’s dream, as the business of the wind-down is usually high). Huszai was crowned Champion with 392, Anderson awarded runner-up with 387 and DeFrancesco placed third with 384.

The funds were still being tallied at this writing, and the final donation to Habitat will be shared on Facebook. Follow us at Ladies Charity Skeet Classic or our website at ladiescharityshootclassic.org.

We want to offer a huge thank you to South River Gun Club and staff for allowing us to take over the club for the weekend, our many generous sponsors (see claytargetnation.com for the complete list) who made it possible to hold our shoot and pay it forward with our donation to Habitat, Athens Area Habitat for Humanity for agreeing to partner with us along the journey, our volunteers who helped with all the things that needed to be done, and our referees who made sure our ladies got the best targets possible. One final thank you to my family (Al and Hannah) for really digging into the trenches to help the Ladies Charity be all that it can be. The 2021 date will be forthcoming.
