Boyd Memorial Cancer Shoot

September 9, 2019 By

The 7th annual Boyd Memorial Cancer Shoot was held the weekend of July 13 at the Cooperstown Sportsmen’s Club in Cooperstown, New York. On this exceptionally warm day, 15 registered skeet shooters shot in both 12-gauge and 20-gauge events. Shooter Kerry Richardson of Mexico, New York, shot a 100 straight in the 12-gauge, and Robert Mosca of Wynantskill, New York, achieved his first 25 straight in the 20-gauge event. At the end of the day, the High Over All trophy, for the combined two guns, was presented to shooter Kerry Henderson on his first time at the fundraising event. We are glad he had such a good day.

The Cancer Memorial Shoot is a fundraiser for cancer research, with funds donated to the American Cancer Society Relay for Life in Otsego County, New York. It is a two-day event with the second day being open shooting for both skeet and trap. Attendees enjoyed warm weather, good company, lunch, raffles and a bake sale. It is always a fun time. This year, one registered shooter, Alan Clark, Sr., traveled from Houston, Texas, to participate.

Thanks to members of the Cooperstown Sportsmen’s Association, led by president Bob Navratil, for their commitment to the success of this important event. Thanks as well to the New York State Skeet Association for providing continued support. Our hope is that a cure will be found for this devastating disease so no more families go through the pain and heartbreak of losing a loved one.

This year’s shoot raised over $7000, bringing the total to over $38,000 that has been donated to the American Cancer Society since 2013. The success of this fundraising event could not have been possible if not for the efforts and leadership of our chairperson, Joyce Boyd. We thank Joyce for her dedication and hard work that she has put into this event.

Boyd Memorial Cancer Shoot

The annual Boyd Memorial Cancer Shoot was held the weekend of July 7 at the Cooperstown Sportsmen’s Club in Cooperstown, NY. The High Over All trophy, for the combined 12 and 20 gauges, was presented to shooter Rick DeBar, who shot his first 25 straight just last year at this same event.

This was the 6th year of the fundraiser that combines a day of registered skeet shooting with a day of open shooting to everyone who wants to shoot skeet and/or trap. The weather cooperated on both days this year, so we enjoyed shooting, good company, lunch, raffles and a bake sale. Funds raised are donated to the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. It is with much pride that we can now say that over $30,000 has been donated to date.

We attribute the continued success of this important fundraiser to family, friends and the skeet community. Thank you to all who attended, including Jack and Loretta Mutchler who have provided us with their guidance over the years. Appreciation goes out to our club membership for donating targets and space and to our club President, Bob Navratil, for his support, dedication and hard work. It is very rewarding to be associated with gun enthusiasts who are making a positive impact in our world as we remember those who have passed from cancer, celebrate the survivors among us, and hope that a cure is within reach.

Boyd Memorial Cancer Shoot

October 10, 2017 By Sherry Kerr

Held in July in Cooperstown, New York, in conjunction with the Evans Open Cancer Shoot, the Boyd Memorial Cancer Shoot once again exceeded the previous year’s event in fundraising. A donation of over $7,000, which is $1,000 more than in 2016, will be made to Relay for Life to help find a cure for cancer. Glenn Stafford was the High-Over-All winner.

This event was started by the desire of one registered skeet shooter, in whose memory the event is named, to bring back registered shoots to Cooperstown. The event is in its fifth year of growth, thanks to many people critical to its success. The foundation of this event started with the Cooperstown Sportsmen’s Association offering to host the fundraiser and donating all the targets for two days of shooting. Second is the shoot committee under the leadership of chair Joyce Boyd, who keeps alive the spirit of her late husband, Spike Boyd, whose inspiration it was to have a home registered shoot. Our skeet and trap shooting community generously gave donations and recruited sponsors for targets broken. Many individuals and surrounding businesses also made significant contributions.

Last but not least, the National Skeet Shooting Association has provided three free memberships each year to boost participation by registered shooters. Two of our club members who received these memberships, Jeff Navratil and Rick DeBar, shot their first 25 straights in a registered shoot at this year’s event. Our club members who received these membership in the past have made it a point to make their annual renewals.

The New York State Skeet Association has also been very generous by giving free advertising in the state annual shoot calendar publication. This has drawn shooters from a wide area within the state of New York. Thanks to both organizations for their support.

By no means will the success of this year’s shoot end our fight against cancer. We all have much to do.
