PSA Redlands Club Championship

July 24, 2018 By Sherry Kerr

The Redlands Club Championship has evolved into a premier Southern California event in just six short years. Last year, Pacific Sporting Arms, led by John Herkowitz and Jordon Hirschi, stepped in to become the title sponsor, adding an element of prestige to the tournament. Past champions include a couple of World Champions and Hall of Fame members.

Eric Kirk, the 2017 champion, returned, along with 2016 champ, Roman Warren. And the 2015 champion, Todd Bender, also competed. Although Todd has visited us since his win, this was his first return to shoot with us. We were pleased to welcome him home. Todd was fully booked during the week with clinics. Perhaps Warren Liu’s statement sums it up best: “This was my best day ever!” All would agree.

The championship is a 200-target tournament consisting of 100 each 20- and 12-gauge birds. One flight begins on Friday afternoon, and the balance completes on Saturday. Forty-five shooters can be accommodated, and the event was full with a waiting list. In fact, one squad ran 6-man for the 12 gauge on Saturday so Joe Fry could join us from Bakersfield. Mike O’Keefe also made the trip from Phoenix. I guess you would have to do the mileage to figure out who traveled farther. We were happy both made it.

As an added bonus for those who shot the Friday rotation, a mixer was included with sausages, links, grilled onions and peppers, chips and dips, and perhaps a beverage or two. It was a very nice social event that contributed to the always-present camaraderie.

In conjunction with Triple B Clays and Kern County Gun Club, great efforts have gone into developing a group of referees in Southern California. For those of you who have taken on this task, you know that it takes constant effort to keep people trained as well as to develop new talent. Our group of refs were terrific. Tori, Ashley, Sarah, Elijah, and William were on time, courteous, and accurate in their calls. They take ownership of their fields and were spot on.

The shoot starts with the yellow shell. The disks were flying, succumbing to 7/8 oz. of #9 shot.  And every one of Mr. Bender’s targets succumbed completely, giving him the lone 100 straight.  A pair of 98s and slews of 97s and 96s were right behind. Shoot-offs for the end of the day were tallied by Tina Stephens, administrator extraordinaire.

Lunch is always included at the Redlands events. In all, about 75 people were fed island chicken wings, exotic Asian skewers, a salad provided by Mary Fitzgerald, and a platter of oatmeal chocolate chip cookies from Lola Fitzgerald.

After lunch, the 12 gauge commenced. This time, two shooters managed the hundie, two shoulda-wouldas, and groups of others right behind. Shoot-offs commenced promptly following the completion of the 12 gauge on field 3, our “stadium field.” Competitors and spectators assembled beneath the now-famous elm trees to settle things up. Concurrent events are shot off as well, so a full plate was in store.

Bender had already won the 20 gauge. But John Lyman and Richard Wurster had to sort out the rest of the podium, and that they did. In the end, the 20 wound up like this: Bender, champion; Lyman, runner-up; and Wurster, third. Tracy Edwards took AA1 without contest, Larry Schur A1, J.R. Fernandez B1, Neil Vann (Mr. 400K) C1, and Martin Eramo D1.

The 12 gauge had some tidying up to do as well. Lyman took the title over Sifers, runner-up, Andre Frey, third. AA1 went to Bender, Wurster A1, Charlie Miledi B1, Vann C1, and newly returned Keith Cantillon, D1, with a very nice 96.

Handcrafted leather pouches provided by Pacific Sporting Arms were created for the HOA winners, including class champs. Envelopes with some mad money were also tucked into each pouch. At completion of the 12 gauge, Bender couldn’t be caught. He won his second Redlands Club Championship by breaking 199×200. John Lyman was right on his heels with 198 and runner-up, and Sifers’ 195 was good enough for third. Tracy Edwards captured AA1, Wurster A1, Miledi B1, Vann C1 and Tim Schilling D1.

Two new NSSA members were recruited during the event. Welcome Eric Linz and Earl Jones. We’re glad you joined us.

Our generous sponsors also contributed to making the event a success. Take a moment to say thank you to these folks when you see them: John Herkowitz of Pacific Sporting Arms, Rob McCormick of Campus Uniforms, Dennis James of So Cal Pianos, John Lyman of ECCO Sports, Tina Stephens, Keith Phelps, Ron Schaefer, the Buoni Family, Lola Fitzgerald, Kern County Gun Club, Lou Riddle Construction, Dr. Bill Bell, Clay Delay Autopuller, Redlands Shooting Park, and Todd Bender Performance Systems.

There are two other important developments to note. Tina Stephens created the So Cal Youth Skeet Shooters nonprofit last year. She was able to donate shells to youth and new NSSA members who participated. If you would like to know more about her organization, have youth who would benefit from clinics or being involved, she would love to hear from you. Email her at SoCalJrShooters@aol.com.

Lastly, if you have shot in Southern California in the last year, you may have met a fantastic ambassador to skeet. Dressed in pink, with bows in her hair and always a bright smile, Lola Fitzgerald has won over the hearts of everyone she meets. She was recently on the local news telling her story. Imagine a positive story on television in California about the shooting sports. Her attitude is contagious. You can find her video on YouTube by searching “Skeet n Bows.” Be sure to check her out. Look for her interview with Todd Bender (Vlog #10).

And a special thank you to all the silent workers who make events like this fun. Plan a trip to So Cal next summer. We’d love to see you.

2018 Zone 7 Skeet Championships

May 28, 2018 By Sherry Kerr

HOA Winners: Steven Bivins (center), Nick Ballentine (left) and Phillip Strelau

The 2018 Zone 7 Skeet Championships were held the last weekend of April at the Kern County Gun Club in Bakersfield, California. This was the third time that the KCGC had hosted the Zone 7 shoot since joining the Zone 7 shoot rotation and the first time they hosted it in the spring.

Zone 7 shooters showed up in full force with 11 of the 13 Zone 7 states represented – so full that some shooters showed up hoping to luck out on an open spot from a late withdrawal when word of a waitlist began to circulate. There were 16 Sub-Junior and Junior shooters who were treated to special goody bags put together by Katie Fry on the KCGC shoot committee.

As the Doubles competition started to heat up Friday morning, Mother Nature decided to treat shooters to a cool, comfortable weekend. Tanner Bissell won the shoot-off for champ over Jack Garner (runner-up and Junior champion), and Nick Ballentine claimed third after a shoot-off against Brett McLaughlin (A1) and Aris Melonas (B1).

The 2018 Zone 7 All-Star Team awards were handed out during the Friday night social at the club. It was a fun-filled, relaxing evening. Thanks go out to White Flyer for helping sponsor the two social events.

The 12-gauge event had its usual showing of 100s. Robbie Lopez claimed gun champ, Nick Ballentine edged close as runner-up and Ryan Meger came in third. From there, 99s took class first spots for Rick Curtin (AAA1), Phillip Strelau (AA1), Tanner Bissell (A1) and Wayne Cagle (B1). The Rookie concurrent proved to be a close race all weekend, with Teresa Buckner taking rookie champion for the 12-gauge event.

Lopez returned to the champ spot on the podium with a 100 in the 20-gauge event, beating Cash Farnworth, who turned in his first 100 straight. Matt Rittman bested the crowd of 99s for third. Kaitlyn Koenig was Lady champion, and Buckner took the Rookie championship by one bird over Chanson Yang.

Nick Ballentine continued to step up on the podium, this time as 28-gauge champion, followed by Jack Bernardi (runner-up) and Billy D. Williams (third). The Junior concurrent is always impressive to watch, and this time, local shooter Joe Fry finished as champion over Ryan Meger and Steven Bivins. The Sub-Junior race was tight all weekend as Stephen Hendrix finished as champion with his 93, followed by Tais Perunova (92), Lola Fitzgerald (91) and Zyler Thomas (90).

All eyes were on the scoreboard as the .410 scores began to come in. Phil Strelau posted a 98 and a shoot-off win for champ over Jordon Hirschi (runner-up) and Steven Bivins (third). This set up the HOA championship shoot-off between Bivins, who prevailed to win the championship, Ballentine (runner-up) and Strelau (third). The Sub-Juniors continued to make their mark with Stephen Hendrix as Sub-Junior champ, Lola Fitzgerald collecting a D1 award and Tais Perunova the E1 spot. Kaitlyn Koenig took Lady champion honors, and Chanson Yang was Rookie Champ.

The Zone 7 Skeet Association would like to thank the KCGC staff and shoot committee for their efforts in ensuring a great shooting venue.

Ken Barnes Open

May 28, 2018 By Sherry Kerr

HOA Winner Dan Lewis gets the big beer bottle. RU – Dan Jones, 3rd – Nick Ballentine

There was another great ending to a shoot that was first started back in the early 1980s at the Kern County Gun Club in Bakersfield, California. Perfect targets and a perfect background always make for good scores, and this year was no different. A near-perfect 99 won the .410 bore, and 100s were needed in all the other guns.

The highlight of the shoot was 14-year-old Cooper Gerecke breaking his first 100 straight in 12 gauge and going on to win the gun championship. Talk about excited! All-American shooters Dan Lewis and Dan Jones took the HOA championship and runner-up.

Over $20,000 was paid out this year, with some gunners getting over $2,000. This is due to the fact that there is big money given for gun and HOA champs, plus guaranteed money given to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places for every class in every gun, over and above the regular class money entry fee payback. It really works and makes this event one of the top money shoots across the nation.

We were visited by NSSA president John Haugh, who participated and donated some of his winnings to the 2019 Ken Barnes Open. Our thanks to John.

We would love to see more of you next year, so put this event on your bucket list.

Restart Open at Kern County (CA) Gun Club

February 24, 2016 By Sherry Kerr

Who does’t want a “Restart” once in a while? And the beginning of each year, New Year’s, just begs for one. Thus it was decided that’s what everyone needed at Kern County Gun Club in January. Organizers knew it was touch and go on the weather when they set the date. But Saint Peter stepped up, and in keeping with California weather, the conditions were fantastic.

HOA Chili Rob McCormick and Ty Younts

The format? A one-day, two-gun tournament comprised of 12 and 20 gauges, along with an HOA.

Generous sponsors have added nice loot for the winners as well: flats of shells for gun and class champions, engraved crystal trophies for HOA winners, and special awards for Lady and Junior champions.

Cliff Bolt has done a fantastic job promoting the Kern County events, and the Restart Open was no exception. The maximum capacity of 50 shooters was filled. Shooters from as far away as Montana and Minnesota were in attendance. In addition to local Bakersfield area shooters, Southern California was also well represented. Everyone did their best to be tuned up and ready for competition. A nice group of shooters convened at the club on Friday for last-minute practice. Good idea, as it turned out; you would need to shoot well to win.

Led by Jon Cunningham, the club was in top-notch form. Dean, Jeff, and Jeffrey Rouell, Jr. put a shine on the property. Not a thread was out of place. The referees were spot on and cheery. If you haven’t experienced the Kern County hospitality, you owe yourself a visit to the club. You won’t be disappointed.

Squadding was organized by Rick Douglass, and Hall of Famer Hal Stewart had the computers teed up well in advance. A handful of folks were registered on Friday. Then beginning at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, the lovely and gracious Tina Stephens took the helm, registering shooters and doing the administrative tasks. Alongside Tina was trainee Misty, who turned out to be a quick study. The volunteers at skeet shoots are the backbone of the sport. Be sure to say “thank you” to those tireless workers at every event.

The 12 gauge commenced with the first flight at 8:30. There were plenty of good scores but no hundie. The door was still open when the second rotation took the fields at 10:00. The stars lined up for one competitor, Rob McCormick, breaking his first-ever 100 straight. Rob is a SoCal celebrity, one of the generous sponsors of the sport. Chili Rob as he is known, has been at it for a few years, nipping at the straight a few times. Congratulations Rob, well deserved. And the score held up, the sole perfect of the gauge.

There was plenty of good shooting: two 99s, a 98, and seven 97s fought for the scraps. In the end it was McCormick at gun champ, Cliff Bolt runner-up, Ty Younts AA1, Mike Archer A1, Harold Jeffers B1, Hal Stewart C1, and Ron Schaefer D1. Sean Collier was the Junior champ, and Kathryn Friesen was Lady champ. One gun down, one to go.

Did I mention that lunch was included in the program? And what a lunch it was. The West Coast famous Buoni BBQ was on hand — BBQ pork loin, BBQ beans, salad and sides. The only downside was the food coma following the feast. Thank you to Frank, Lori, and Dominic for feeding us. What a treat.

Immediately following lunch, the first rotation of 20 gauge shooters took the field. Conditions were still great and high scores followed. This time it was another SoCal shooter who stepped up. Hall of Famer and National Director Keith Phelps cleared the field with his 100 straight. He was followed by three 99s and three 98s. After shoot-offs, it ended up Phelps as gun champ, Keith Key runner-up, Buoni AA1, local shooter Tracy Edwards A1, Chili Rob McCormick B1, Ron Schaefer C1, and Joe Kerchinski D1. Again, Sean Collier was the Junior champ and Kathryn Friesen was Lady champ.

Drama was developing on the HOA front. Three shooters were in the hunt, followed by a couple who needed help from the leaders. Dominic Buoni has been whipping just about everyone’s tails, so he sort of had a bullseye on his back. McCormick was only down two targets but finished early, having to wait on results. Younts was also right there with the other two. It was really anyone’s game. When the dust settled, McCormick’s 198 captured the HOA title. Buoni and Younts shot off their 197s for runner-up, with Younts prevailing. Buoni took AA1, followed by Keith Key A1, Phelps B1, Shaefer C1, and Kerchinski D1.

Guess who the Junior and Lady Champs were? You got it, Collier and Friesen. In addition to the perfect scores, there were several personal bests during the day. Congratulations and great shooting, everyone.

The one-day tournaments have been well received at Kern County Gun Club. Bolt and Cunningham have been instrumental in promoting and supporting the skeet program. The results are obvious. After all, people vote with their feet. At this event alone, five new NSSA members were signed up. It’s satisfying to have a full shoot and see smiling faces. Thank you, guys. Please keep up the good work.

Kudos: Rob McCormick

February 2, 2016 By Sherry Kerr

Rob McCormickDuring the Restart Open held at Kern County Gun Club, Rob McCormick shot his first-ever 100 straight. It was in the 12 gauge event, which secured the gun championship. Rob followed that with a 98 in the 20 gauge, earning him the HOA Championship with 198×200. Great shooting, Chili Rob!
