Ralph Holtz Memorial at Generations Skeet Club

June 26, 2018 By Sherry Kerr

Generations Skeet Club (formerly the 7-H Skeet Club) hosted the 15th annual Ralph Holtz Memorial Shoot at their beautiful fields near Patton, Pennsylvania on June 1-3.

Even though the weather people had been calling for rain for this weekend, Friday and Saturday were nice, partly cloudy with light breezes and a bit muggy. Sunday, on the other hand, fulfilled the prognosticator’s predictions by raining all day!

Forty-eight shooters shot at least one gun. Chris Kline’s 392 was good for HOA champion; Mike Wollard was HOA runner-up with a 391. Missy Vescovi was Ladies HOA champ.

Twenty-two shooters shot Doubles on Friday afternoon. Kline’s 98 made him champion. Class firsts went to Wollard (A), Scott Grossett (B), Brad Botteicher (C) and George Gleich (D).

The 28-gauge shooting began on Saturday morning with 34 shooters participating. Dan Felton was champion with a nice 99 after a shoot-off with Joe Vescovi. Class firsts were Joe Vescovi (AA), Roy Holtz (A), Ed Call (B) after shooting off 96s with Kevin Spessard, John Davies (C) and Tracey Snyder (D).

Shooting continued on Saturday afternoon with 38 shooters in the 12-gauge event. Frank Smithmeyer had the lone 100 straight and was champion. Clay Gormish won a shoot-off of 99s with Joe Vescovi and took AA1. Wollard, Josh Crofutt, Grossett, Davies and Brian Long, respectively, were A, B, C, D and E class winners. Allison Shaffer from St. Marys, PA had her first registered 25 straight.

The food was abundant and delicious on Saturday evening. The meal was a combination affair serving as the banquet for the winter skeet league held at Generations and the Holtz Memorial Shoot repast.

The .410 bore was shot on Sunday morning. After all the little bullets were fired, Wollard’s 98 was good for champion, after a shoot-off with Kline. Class firsts went to Kline (AA), Gormish (A), Adam Vollmer (B), Gary Trilli (C) and Doug Long (D). The Three-Man Blind event, based on .410 bore scores, is always fun with secret ballot bidding for the eight computer-picked teams after the meal on Saturday night. The winners were Joe Vescovi, Kline and Doug Long after they won a shoot-off with Leyo, Gormish and Trilli. Wollard bought the winning team.

The 20-gauge event was last and took place on Sunday afternoon with 34 shooters. Ryan Holtz, Leyo and Joe Vescovi shot 99s; Ryan won the shoot-off to take the championship. Leyo, Vescovi, Tim Holtz, Davies and Shaffer, respectively, took firsts in AA, A, B, C and D classes. Terry Smith, from New Germany, PA, shot his first registered 25 straight.

A hat shoot was conducted at the end of the day. Allison Shaffer’s and Terry Smith’s hats were well perforated to commemorate their 25 straights this weekend.

The shoot management team included Tori Holtz, registration and scorekeeping, and Michael Vescovi, chief referee. Young, non-shooting referees included Kelsey Krug, Mikayla Lansbury, Paige McMullen and Jake Beebe, who did a great job.

Greater Houston Hosts Texas State Shoot

October 18, 2017 By Sherry Kerr

Greater Houston Gun Club was the site of the 2017 Texas Skeet Shooters Association’s State Championships held June 22-25. The weather forecast called for lots of rain, but luckily it held off during most of the shooting time. Allen Cline began the shoot by winning the TSSA Referee Championship and taking home the Al Topham Champion Referee Award.

The Doubles Event, sponsored by Todd Bender, got underway Thursday, and two contenders with perfect scores faced off in the shoot-off. Brandon Cade emerged as the champion over Jason Ward, while Jack Davis claimed third place after besting the 99s. John L. Barnes, Cameron Schuster, Kendall Jaroszewski, Donald Root, Jeff Mossman and Lloyd King took top honors in their classes.

The last shoot-off of the night was for the five-man team trophy, which is greatly coveted at the Texas State Shoot. The youth of Team Texas won over experience, and the spectators went wild when the shoot-off was completed. As always, Greater Houston Gun Club treated the shoot participants to hors d’oeuvres as the shoot-offs were taking place.

Friday morning was the start of the Greater Houston Gun Club 12 Gauge Championship, which would be concluded on Saturday due to the Friday night banquet. Friday evening was a night of celebration as the top shooters in the state were awarded state honors and a new TSSA Hall of Famer was inducted at the Hall of Fame Banquet. Robert Paxton entertained the crowd with his vast knowledge of shooting information as shooters were called to collect their belt buckles, and at the end of the night, Tami Myers was introduced as the newest Hall of Fame member of the Texas Skeet Shooters Association.

Saturday was a full day as the 12, 20 and 28 gauges would be concluded while working around a few showers and storms. Prior to the shoot-offs, everyone gathered for a three-gun salute and a moment of silence to remember our friends lost over the past year. Once all the day’s regulation shots were fired, the shooters began preparing for shoot-offs. Only six shooters managed perfect scores with the big gun, as the wind made it challenging for all. Garrett Hackmaster was the last one standing in the shoot-off to claim the 12-gauge title in front of perennial contenders, Robert Paxton and Jason Ward. Barnes, Greg Massari, Frank Tucker, Robert Davis, David Blakemore, Gary Steuerwald and Pierce Miller were the top shooters in their respective classes. Terrell Rifle and Pistol Club claimed the 12 gauge five-man team championship.

Ten competitors broke perfect scores in the 20 gauge, and all were ready to settle the gun championship in the shoot-off stadium. Cade claimed his second gun championship of the weekend by outlasting John Kirkland and outstanding junior shooter, Andrew Benson, for the 20-gauge title sponsored by Lonesome Charlie’s. Skeete Smitha, Helen Swetman, Mikaela Saenz (with her first 100 in the 20 gauge), Jeff Zwiebel, Mike Guthrie, and Christian Saenz earned class championships. The youngsters of Team Texas took home another five-man team trophy after outlasting their competition.

The 28 gauge, sponsored by Doug Toulouse, was the next event to be settled. Up-and-coming Junior shooter, Nicholas Godfrey, continued his impressive year, winning the 28-gauge title over runner-up Armour Strunk and third-place finisher Michael Galo, III. Class champions included Barnes, Matthew Ward, Lauren Burge, Louis Levy, Charli Abendroth and Stephen Naeve. The Dallas Gun Club team was eager to take home a five-man team trophy and did just that after outlasting the Buttercups, shooting for Bandera.

After Saturday, only the .410 bore remained. With many competitors close to the top of the leaderboard, it was anyone’s tournament to win. Randy Wall and Andrew Benson broke their first 100s in the .410, along with Cameron Schuster. In the end, Schuster claimed the championship, which was sponsored by Richard McCarter, while Benson and Wall settled for runner-up and third. John Castillo, Bailey Glenewinkel, Robert Ellington, David Cudia, John Delaloye and Travis McHenry were the stand-outs in class competition. Team Texas continued their hot streak and took home another eagle trophy.

As usual, the HOA comes down to the .410, and the 2017 Texas State Championships was no different. Schuster sealed the Paxton-sponsored HOA Championship with his perfect .410 score and 398×400. Three 396s followed the champion, and Paxton took runner-up over William Edmunds, third, and Andrew Benson, AA1. Bailey Glenewinkel took home the Ladies’ championship, followed by Helen Swetman and Lauren Burge. Class winners included Castillo, Benson, Jack Davis, Robert Ellington, John Delaloye, Christian Saenz and Sydney Nickel. The five-man team from Greater Houston Gun Club made the host club proud by claiming the last team award, the HOA eagle trophy. In the end, it was an outstanding tournament with great competition and fellowship. Thank you to all the shoot sponsors and Greater Houston Gun Club for making the Texas State Skeet Championships a wonderful event.

Boyd Memorial Cancer Shoot

October 10, 2017 By Sherry Kerr

Held in July in Cooperstown, New York, in conjunction with the Evans Open Cancer Shoot, the Boyd Memorial Cancer Shoot once again exceeded the previous year’s event in fundraising. A donation of over $7,000, which is $1,000 more than in 2016, will be made to Relay for Life to help find a cure for cancer. Glenn Stafford was the High-Over-All winner.

This event was started by the desire of one registered skeet shooter, in whose memory the event is named, to bring back registered shoots to Cooperstown. The event is in its fifth year of growth, thanks to many people critical to its success. The foundation of this event started with the Cooperstown Sportsmen’s Association offering to host the fundraiser and donating all the targets for two days of shooting. Second is the shoot committee under the leadership of chair Joyce Boyd, who keeps alive the spirit of her late husband, Spike Boyd, whose inspiration it was to have a home registered shoot. Our skeet and trap shooting community generously gave donations and recruited sponsors for targets broken. Many individuals and surrounding businesses also made significant contributions.

Last but not least, the National Skeet Shooting Association has provided three free memberships each year to boost participation by registered shooters. Two of our club members who received these memberships, Jeff Navratil and Rick DeBar, shot their first 25 straights in a registered shoot at this year’s event. Our club members who received these membership in the past have made it a point to make their annual renewals.

The New York State Skeet Association has also been very generous by giving free advertising in the state annual shoot calendar publication. This has drawn shooters from a wide area within the state of New York. Thanks to both organizations for their support.

By no means will the success of this year’s shoot end our fight against cancer. We all have much to do.

Tanner Memorial Open at San Antonio Gun Club

October 10, 2017 By Sherry Kerr

It was a hot time at the San Antonio Gun Club on the weekend of July 21-23. To paraphrase “pants on fire,” it was “fields on fire” as temperatures broke records on both Saturday and Sunday. The gun club provided iced water and ice-cold towels, which allowed shooters to survive the 104-105-degree blast furnace heat. The Tanner, named in memory of Col. William “Wild Bill” Tanner, a retired World War II fighter pilot ace, was attended by 55 forged-in-Texas-heat shooters.

Jamie Gaines, assisted by his erstwhile crew of kitchen help, once again delivered a finger-licking shrimp boil, and ice cream helped cool the Saturday evening heat.

Van Boerner took HOA honors. Lady HOA Champion was young Peri Olson. Gun champs were Greg Massari, Doubles and 12 gauge; Troy Behrens, 20 gauge; Bill Tanner (Col. Tanner’s son), 28 gauge; and Cody Sergeant, .410.

Young Ms. Lauren Lee from Houston was honored with the traditional ceremonial cap shooting for her first 100 straight in the 20 gauge. Way to go, Lauren, with many more to come!

As an additional feature and a further way of giving back to the shooters, the San Antonio Gun Club sponsored a no-fee, three-man blind draw for the .410 event. The winning team members each received $50, 2nd place $35 and 3rd place $20, all paid in cash on the spot.

Some very special thanks to the referees are in order. Their conscientious efforts during the high heat conditions that eventually forced a 30-minute cool-down period for them is tribute to their dedication to the event. They and the field staff of the San Antonio Gun Club helped make the shoot a memorable one.

Parsons’ 398 Dominates 3F Summer Classic

October 10, 2017 By Sherry Kerr

Craig Parsons, 12-, 20-, 28-gauge and HOA Champ; Dave Wilke, 12-gauge runner-up

The 3F Club in Lewiston, New York, hosted the 3F Classic on July 21-23 with 48 shooters attending from New York, Pennsylvania and Canada. The 3F continues to host one of the top money shoots in New York and also maintains Top-100 status. For the 2017 event, over $3,000 in added money was awarded, along with breakfast, lunch, dinner and a cocktail hour for all, thanks to its many dedicated sponsors.

Friday started with the doubles event with four 99s being posted by Des Ivanov, Matt Kelly, Bill Black and Ed Smith. After a lengthy shoot-off, Ivanov emerged as champion, with Kelly as runner-up. Class winners were Don Lewandowski AA1, Bill Black A1, Mike Smith B1, Aaron Burnett C1, and John Yackiw D1.

Saturday brought clear and bright sunshine, light winds and temperatures in the 80s to the Niagara region for the 12 gauge. Seven perfect scores (Mike Ferchaw, Des Ivanov, John Kapron, Matt Littlefield, Craig Parsons, and Juniors Matt Lenehan and Dave Wilke) and eight 99s were posted. After three boxes, Parsons won the championship with Wilke runner-up. Class winners were Lenehan AA1, Colin Smingler A1, Victoria Ferchaw B1, James Johnson C1, Al Morris D1, and Jimmy Hunter E1.

Following the lunch break, shooters took to the field for the 28-gauge event, in which Parsons posted the lone 100 to win the championship. Eight 99s were called to the shoot-off field to battle it out for the second spot. Ed Smith outlasted Littlefield, Kapron, Ivanov, Joe Strazzezeri, Dale Patterson, Mike Ferchaw, and Dave Sobiegray for the runner-up title. Class winners were Kapron AA1, Strazzeri A1, Sobiegray B1 and Bruce Raymond C1.

Sunday morning the weather was still cooperating, with bright sunshine and light winds. The 20-gauge event concluded with four 100s by Kapron, Bernie Lenehan, Parsons and Smith, plus six 99s. Parsons outlasted the field to take the championship, and Smith took runner-up. Class winners were Kapron AA1, Lewandowski A1, Dana Driscoll B1, and Burnett C1.

For the .410, the final event of the day, all eyes were on Craig Parsons, looking for the 400×400. Thirty years ago, Craig posted a 500×500 at the 3F during the 1987 New York State Shoot, but with the lone 100 and his first in the .410, Dale Patterson captured the championship. Parsons, Sobiegray, and Kody Hoth shot off 98s for runner-up, with Hoth prevailing. Class winners Parsons AA1, Sobiegray A1, Victoria Ferchaw B1, Mike Haff C1, and John Yackiw D1.

Finishing at 398, Parsons captured the HOA crown. Des Ivanov and Dale Patterson shot off 395s for runner-up, with Ivanov prevailing. Class winners were John Kapron AA1, Dale Patterson A1, Dave Sobiegray B1, Victor Stirpe C1, and John Yackiw D1.

Thank you to all of our dedicated sponsors, especially Duane Manth and Manth Mfg., without whom we would not be able to offer the added money, and to the venue to enable us to grow the shoot year after year. Thanks to Randy Cook for his generous donation for the 20-gauge B-C-D event. Thanks to our referees and all our volunteers who made this shoot possible, including Mike Clarke, Jeff Ventry, Garland Taborn, Dave Sobiegray, Rich Falcone, Tim Baldwin, Jackie Ventry, and Lisa Kelly.

We invite you to join us next year and make it a vacation. There’s a lot to do in Niagara Falls!
